Job Description

Job Title: Wheat Crop Scientist

Location: Reading University

Hourly Rate: £38.11ph to £47.68ph – depending on experience - via an Umbrella Company (Inside IR35)

Employment Type: Contract – initially minimum of 18 months (likely on-going)

Start Date: ASAP

Hours: Part-Time – can be full days or part days  (i.e. 3 full days, or 4 or 5 shorter days), 0.6 of the working week

The R&D team is seeking an experienced and passionate agronomist to help drive the sustainability of the raw ingredients (wheat flour) used in the manufacture of our products.  The role will be liaising with external partners to help evaluate and deploy technologies and practices with our supply-chain partners that achieve our 2050 aim of achieving net-zero regenerative farming. Our strategy leverages plant breeding, agronomy and farming technology.

How you will contribute

You will:

  • Proactively manage and develop existing multi-partner collaborative projects aimed at improving the sustainability of our wheat flour supply.
  • Review research proposals and technologies of external organizations to determine whether their suitability to meeting.
  • Liaise will internal stakeholders in our biscuit category to ensure our R&D programme within the MEU aligns with their commercial sourcing requirements, quality specifications and environmental footprint requirements.

  • Must have excellent knowledge plant breeding and agronomy, preferably in wheat or other cereals.
  • Experience in managing projects the meet the requirements through involving both external R&D collaborators and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to understand complex needs within the supply chain from the perspective of farmers, millers, internal procurement and bakers to ensure implementation of change.
  • Ability to analyse biological data and produce robust conclusions on the outcome of research.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse teams
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to changing priorities and requirements.
  • Excellent organization skills and multi-project management

 

Education/Certification

  • Preferably an advanced degree (PhD) in the field relevant to the plant sciences and very strong work experience in the field of plant breeding or agronomy. 
  • High level of proficiency in English (essential) and French (desirable).

 

Additional Information

  • No direct research, will be liaising with 3rd parties, running trials of wheat, providing solutions for wheat sustainability
  • Managing research projects
  • PhD or equivalent experience to that level.Industry experience very important.
